Vertical grinders

The part sits on a rotary table and gravity holds it down. For bearing races, cam profiles, and large heavy parts, vertical is the configuration that makes physics work for you.

What they're for

A vertical grinder holds the workpiece on a horizontal rotary table while one or more grinding heads work from above and the side. The defining applications: bearing-race grinding (the curved raceway profiles inside bearing rings), cam-profile grinding, gear bores and faces, and large components like hydraulic cylinders where the part is simply too heavy to spin between centers.

The physics is the selling point. A heavy part sitting on a table is inherently stable — no deflection between centers, no chuck distortion. For large-diameter precision work, that stability is the accuracy.

Size range

Vertical grinders span an enormous range. Compact machines handle bearing rings a few hundred millimeters across; large machines swing parts up to 2,500mm (about 8 feet) and carry loads up to 10,000kg. Published specifications for current Taiwanese-built verticals (for example the Dawn series) cite X/Z resolution of 0.0001mm with optical scales and hydrostatic rotary tables — the kind of numbers bearing work demands. Match the swing and table load rating to your heaviest real part, with margin.

What to compare when you're shopping

When vertical is the right call — and when it isn't

Right call: bearing races and rings, cam profiles, large heavy parts where gravity fixturing beats centers or chucks, parts needing ID/OD/face grinding in one setup.

Wrong call: long slender shafts — that's cylindrical work. High-volume small parts — centerless. Small bores in chucked parts — internal. Vertical machines are expensive to buy, rig, and install; don't buy one for parts a smaller process handles.

The foundation question. Vertical grinders in the larger sizes need engineered foundations. Get the foundation spec and the rigging plan quoted alongside the machine — it's a five-figure line item that surprises first-time buyers.
